THE COURSE
This 3 Day / 24 Hour course is designed to give the Fire Department supervisory officer or Internal Affairs Investigator a comprehensive overview of the organization and design of Internal Affairs Investigations in the Fire Service. This course should be attended by any Civilian Staff Member, Fire Captain, Chief Officer or Executive Officer that could find themselves dealing with Internal Affairs issues or complaints of misconduct by service members.

Assessing Risk and Liability
Role and Purpose of Internal Affairs
Basic Internal Affairs Principles
Legal Framework and Responsibilities
Recordkeeping and Computer Case Management Systems
Internal Affairs Case Law
Defining Discipline
Establishing Internal Affairs Procedures and Policies
Purpose and Scope of Administrative Investigations
Formal and Informal Investigations
Interviewing and Investigative Techniques
Rights of the Employee
Case Organization and Management
Developing an Investigative Plan
Report Writing and Case Organization.

A practical exercise will be conducted on day three in which the students will have the opportunity to actually utilize the course material during a simulated Internal Affairs investigation.

Lt. Gary Gregson (ret.) an acknowledged statewide expert in Internal Affairs investigations and instruction and Investigator Sharon McClatchy of the Internal Affairs and Professional Standards Unit of the Sacramento Fire Department.
